French Polishing

French polishing is a technique used in restoration or period pieces, and it can also be used for touch up. The method is to apply shellac in micro coats to build up a film that can then be colored, if desired, and blended into the surrounding area. Most period furniture was french polished as shellac was one of the few things early cabinet makers had to use. The soft look and amber apearance of the finish cannot be duplicated in any other way.
